A Summer Weekend With Rick Springfield

        Submitted By James Downing

What do you think of when you hear the name Rick Springfield? Soap opera star? Bubble gum rock? Teeny bopper rock? Well, you might think these things about him if you have never seen him live. If you have seen him live you will think rock star. The man hits the stage with so much energy and excitement that you have to wonder how he does it. After all, he was about to  turn 60 years young.

I had made plans with two very good friends of mine, Julie and Sue, to take a weekend road trip to check out these two shows. We all met up in Memphis, TN and headed out for the drive to Tunica, MS. I had never been to this town before and was looking forward to it.

Charlie Daniels Band Concert Review – Nashville, TN – Wildhorse Saloon – 8/27/09 (BLOG)

Concert Review Written By Tom Thompson

Charlie Daniel’s and the Charlie Daniel’s Band brought their southern rock show to the Wildhorse Saloon on August 27th, 2009.

I will have to say that Charlie and the band still know how to bring southern rock back to Nashville. The talent of Charlie and his band sounded better than ever. One thing I noticed with this show is Charlie plays a lot more electric and acoustic guitar than I have seen him do in the past. I was very pleased with how well he can still play, especially the numerous guitar leads. Charlie’s fiddle playing is still amazing, we just didn’t see him play it very often.

Loverboy September 4, 2009 Wildhorse Saloon Nashville, TN

                    Concert Review by James Downing

For each decade in music there are a handful of bands that define the spirit and attitude of those years. The 50′s had Elvis, Chuck Berry, and Bill Haley, the 60′s had The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and The Monkees, The 70′s had Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Peter Frampton, and The Eagles. The 80′s had Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey and the subject of this review, Loverboy.

Loveboy blew down from Canada and set the rock and roll world on fire with their rock anthems to make their mark music history. Lead by singer Mike Reno, the band chalked up a string of hit singles and lps that have become 80′s classics.  MTV was just getting started and this medium served as a springboard for many artists and bands and Loverboy was right there leading the pack.

Paul McCartney Concert Review – Atlanta, GA – 08/15/09

                                Written by Mike Arnold

Atlanta Georgia’s Piedmont Park hosted Paul McCartney and his rocking band to a night of rock and roll for over 50,000 fans on August 15, 2009.  This was a night where the old and young gathered together to enjoy hits from Paul McCartney, Wings, The Fireman, and The Beatles.  I took the trip from Nashville, TN to Atlanta, GA to enjoy the night and since Concert Blast was selected as media to cover this special event, I decided to create a podcast from the evening.  This concert was a benefit for Piedmont Park and was billed as “The Green Concert”.   It was encouraged for everyone to take the Marta to the downtown area.  They called this a “No Car” event.  Everyone seemed to agree because there were empty parking lots.

I haven’t seen Paul McCartney perform since the Wings Over America tour and I must say that Paul McCartney still has the strength, energy, and endurance to perform a concert which lasted over 2 and 1/2 hours.  I loved the setlist, although there would be a few changes if I were given the opportunity to create it.  Overall the night was wonderful and when the 30 minute rain storm came, the fans kept rocking as if it wasn’t raining at all.  The band members were excellent musicians with wonderful background vocals.  Rusty Anderson: Guitar/Bass, Brian Ray: Guitar/Bass, Abe Laboriel Jr: Drums, Paul Wickens: Keyboards.  Special Thanks to all who made it possible for Concert Blast to cover this concert; Aimedra Kelly of Piedmont Park, Holli Mattison of Live Nation, Paul McCartney’s PR Firm: MPL Communications, and of course Paul McCartney’s management.

Heavy metal landed with a one, two punch when the Judas Priest / Whitesnake tour hit the Municipal Aud. on July 22. It was a hot summer night but it was about to get a lot hotter. Both bands were celebrating anniversaries of two of their best selling lps, Whitesnake’s “Slide It In” and Priest’s “British Steel”. Metal heads of all ages welcomed them with open arms.

Before I get to the review, I must say it was really great to be in the Municipal again. I guess it had been 15 years since I attended a show there and I was happy to see that it looked like the place was getting a face lift. New paint job on the walls and what I thought was a really nice touch. They have huge reproductions of tickets from many of the artists that have played there. I spent a lot of time before the show started just walking around the hall looking at these memories. Elvis, The Jacksons, The Eagles, The Rolling Stones, and many other artists and bands have played there. You can say what you want about this venue but there have been some real legends play the stage of this building. I know, I was there for most of them.
