        Written by James Downing

While Mike, Brian, and Tom were paddling their way around Memphis during the Memphis In May festivities, I was high and dry in St Louis for The Bangles concert at The Pageant. The Bangles have always been one of my all time favorite bands but I had never had the chance to see them live. When I saw that they were playing a date in St Louis, I put in for my vacation days at work and got a ticket the first day they went on sale. I was very excited during the weeks leading up to the show. I was finally going to get to see The Bangles live!

The Bangles were the off spring of another band called The Bangs. An LA band with it roots firmly in the Paisley Pop sound that is so popular in that city. Michael Steele, who was also a brief member of The Runaways, teamed up with sisters Vicki (guitar) and Debbie Peterson (drums) and Susanna Hoffs (guitar) to form one of the most memorable bands from the 80′s. It was day two of the Memphis in May Beale Street Music Festival 2010 and Concert Blast photographer, Brian Hasbrook was once again on hand to deliver the excitement through the camera’s eye.

We arrived too late to get Brian in the photo pit for Colbie Caillat’s set, but he was on hand to capture the on stage performances of Jerry Lee Lewis, Seether, Michael McDonald, and Hall and Oates… until he and the other photographers were escorted out of the pit in a hurry.

The guys start the day by interviewing fans of the music festival and having a fun conversation with Percy, an employee of Rendezvous for 40 years.  Percy takes us down memory lane as he discussed the former Presidents and many stars who have attended the restaurant.

They ate a wonderful meal before heading to the Beale Street Music Festival while to enjoy the various genres of music from Colbie Caillat, Jerry Lee Lewis, Seether, Michael McDonald, along with Hall and Oates. Continue Reading…

It’s Memphis in May and it always begins with the Beale Street Music Festival.  This is one of our favorite festivals to attend due to the friendly atmosphere, the food, and of course the various styles of music.

Concert Blast photographer Brian Hasbrook took pics throughout the weekend and here are the pics from Friday night.

Brian captured performance photos from Blues Traveler, Jeff Beck, B52s, Goo Goo Dolls, and Limp Bizkit.

It was the first weekend in May and on Friday night April 30th 2010 Mike, Brian, Tom, with special helper Steve traveled to Memphis, TN to cover the Beale Street Music Festival during the Memphis In May festivities.

The guys were pleased to be back together covering one of their favorite concert festivals.  It seems to rain at least one day every year of the festival, but the skies were clear during most of the festival times, although there were many storms before and after.  One exception was when tornado warnings came  through Memphis on Saturday night and the headliners could not perform (more on this during Saturday’s coverage – Part 2).  On this podcast we cover only the Friday night events.

The B52s performed their fun-time dance party-rock that kicked off  the fun times at their stage.  Afterwards the stage headliner, Goo Goo Dolls, performed a full set with all their hits, several new tunes, and an encore of Supertramp’s “Give A Little Bit.”

It was a Rowdy Friday night in Nashville, TN at the Bridgestone Arena.  Hank Williams Jr. led the charge as Jamey Johnson, Eric Church, and The Grascals followed.  The crowd at the arena was full of energy and ready for fun.

                            The Grascals

The Grascals performed a free concert outside on the plaza for the attendees before the doors opened.  The Grascals were well received on the outside as well as on the inside of the arena as they opened the show.  After their set they took time to have a short conversation with Mike Arnold and Brian Hasbrook who were there covering the show.   Mike and Brian missed Eric Church’s performance due to the backstage visit, but they had such a good time it was worth it.

In the 70′s one thing was rare in rock and roll. That was a rock band that was fronted by a woman. You had the Carly Simons and the Carole Kings but there just wasn’t that many “rocker chicks” making music in the 70′s. That was until 1975 when two sisters from Seattle, Washington released the album “Dreamboat Annie”. The record was a huge hit and was heard blasting out of the speakers of any rock station not only in America, but all over the world. The two sisters were Ann and Nancy Wilson. They followed up “Dreamboat Annie” with “Magazine”, “Little Queen”, “Dog & Butterfly” and many more. Each album spawned hit single after hit single. The hits kept coming and the band had even more success in the 80′s.

Concert Blast began with Mike Arnold, Brian Hasbrook, and Tom Thompson. Three guys who grew up together in the Nashville, TN area. These guys have attended hundreds (if not over a thousand) concerts.

Every time the guys would get together with friends, they would all want to know about the shows they’ve seen and found themselves discussing these concerts for long periods of time.

Mike thought a music talk show would make a great radio show. After failing to convince radio stations/companies that this format could be good for radio, he gave up. A couple of years later, Mike was introduced to podcasting. He approached Brian and Tom about the idea of discussing concerts on a podcast and they said let’s do it! Concert Blast formed a family friendly podcast and the first podcast was uploaded in May of 2005.

Since our website began back in May of 2005 and have produced more than 200 audio shows with many blogs and posted photos.

We have been invited to cover many concerts and music festivals such as the Bonnaroo Music Festival, Memphis in May Beale Street Music Festival, CMA Music Festival, as well as many of the top Music Concerts (Paul McCartney, Aerosmith, Ringo Starr, Bob Seger, Billy Joel, Sheryl Crow, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Styx, Joan Jett, Night Ranger, and many more).

We usually feature Classic Rock acts, but we do not limit ourselves to it.
