From time to time we have guest bloggers doing our job.  This particular post was written by one of our favorite guest bloggers, Alabama Tina (Tina Williams).  On April 10th, Alabama Tina made a trip up I-65 to Nashville, TN to catch one of her favorite new up and coming acts in the country music genre, John and Jacob (John Davidson and Jacob Bryant).  In Tina’s words, “John and Jacob are like a high octane fuel taking Nashville by storm right now with their hit song, “Be My Girl,” which was featured on Season 2 Episode #205 of the ABC television show Nashville.”  Enjoy the concert review, photos, and a little more from Alabama Tina.

I personally first saw these guys when I attended a taping of “CMT Listen Up” as the August 2013 artist.  It was the first time CMT had showcased an unsigned artist for “Listen Up” since it started in 2011.  I was in awe of their dynamic vocals and unique spin of taking something old and recreating something very new and different.  Their sound reminds me of a mixture of Buddy Holly and The Beatles mixed with current Pop and Country.

The band is made up of the multi-talented members John Davidson, Jacob Bryant, Jake Thrasher, Trevor Davis, and Austin Smith.  John and Jacob were born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, but are living in the Nashville vicinity now. I was impressed with their abilities to play so many different instruments and how all of the members sing together with perfect harmonies.  I believe that it is a bonus that both John and Jacob switch up on lead vocals because it brings something different to the table.  It was later that I discovered that John and Jacob opened up for The Band Perry on several shows in the UK.  Afterwards, they went on to co-write the song “DONE” with the Perry brothers for The Band Perry, which went straight to #1!  I continued to attend performances of theirs as they are currently touring with their new self-titled album and am happy to say that they will be opening for Kacey Musgraves on her European tour this summer.

After attending their show at 3rd and Lindsley in Nashville, Tennessee on April 10, 2014, I knew that I had to share this band with everyone else.  When you attend a John and Jacob show, there is something nostalgic about the music and about the young girls screaming for them as well.  They keep you dancing and singing along the whole time as they are dancing with you.

When John and Jacob took the stage, they opened with the song “Summer.”  This is a beautiful laid back song and also the one that has the most nostalgic sound in my opinion.  You cannot help but bounce back and forth even with the slower vibe, especially when Jacob his shaking his head around like crazy.  It is so catchy that even the drummer Trevor was mouthing the words, which brings a joy to you when you see everyone in the band so involved and happy.  “The Road” followed up with a stripped down start and then kicked in where everyone was singing the chorus and clapping along with the band.  “Coming Back” was next, which sounded great followed by Jacob announcing “Brand New” as a new song of theirs.  This one was slower paced with a nice country melody.

The guys immediately jumped into “Think About You” which truly reminds me of an early 60’s tune.  The harmonies are so strong on this particular song.  John and Jacob really belt out their harmonies when singing together which gives such a powerful sound that you cannot help but fall in love with in their music.  One of my favorites, “Guilty Face” was next with a strong bluesy guitar.  It has such a catchy bridge/chorus with “Oh Baby, I love you,” “I do…ooh ooh ooh ooh.”  Before you know it, all you can do is sing all of the ooh’s with them.  It is a little darker sound than their others, with a guitar solo that rips between John and Austin in addition to great riffs.  “Goodbye” was next as a softer song dealing with having to say goodbye, but in a peaceful way.  The lyrics are special it seems and the girls can really relate to it in particular.  “The Weekend” has an upbeat tempo that made everyone dance.  The chorus built up to a very high and powerful note, but then they stop the music for a moment and just sing.  It gives you a glimpse into how talented this band is vocally. “Sparkle” was next with such a sweet and soft sound that gave you a moment to feel relaxed after all of the energy from the previous song.

For the next song “Ride with Me” Jacob said, “Guys grab a girl, it’s time to DANCE!”

This fast paced song starts out with John on harmonica and Jacob singing with high and powerful vocals.  The audience was swaying and clapping with the beat, especially during the breaks in the song.  The high energy song “Breaking the Law” comes straight at you like a freight train!  This one completely rocks.  The crowd started jumping up and down to the music and shaking their heads all around.  It is one of the most fun songs on the album.  They followed it up with another high-paced, blood rushing to the brain song called “Problematic Chemistry.”  This one has a great bass line and groove, so the people just kept dancing.  It was non-stop!

At this point, we are 13 out of 17 songs in and I am extremely impressed with how many songs they have played, how they still sound flawless, and still exude so much energy.  The next song “Give it Away” was a great dance tune that kept everyone smiling, dancing, and having a great time.  My absolute FAVORITE song of theirs is “I’d Go Back.”  This is a slower song with a catchy chorus and addictive verses.  The strong way that this song is being sung makes the listener believe that if they could go back and change what went wrong, they really would.  These are the words that every girl wants to hear when she has had her heart broken.  I am particularly fond of the lyric “All of those country nights back in Birmingham,” but then again, I am Alabama Tina….lol.

The last 3 songs were “Do Me Like You Do,” in which the band said that it was the first time they had ever played it for an audience.  We were excited about this one and it was fast and funky.  The band did a really good job of keeping the energy flowing through to the end and decided to play their smash hit “Be My Girl” next.  Of course when the song started people started going crazy, jumping around, and singing all of the lyrics to the top of their lungs.  I noticed that both John and Jacob do these little flirty things with their eyes and their smiles that make the girls scream.  I found this to be very endearing because many bands seem to have forgotten the value of good old-fashioned entertainment, but not these guys.  They are all about dancing, jumping, playing with the crowd, and getting everyone involved like true stars should be.  Jacob plays the trumpet in this song in addition to John adding a unique whistle to the tune.  It is no wonder this song is such a hit.  They ended the night with “Oh Melissa,” in which Jacob said, “I want everyone to go crazy out there because we are about to leave it on the stage and we want ya’ll to leave it in the crowd!  Everybody stand up and have a good time!”  It started with a Rockin’ guitar that was non-stop craziness and tons of fun.  It was a great way to end the show.

After 17 songs I was exhausted, so I can only imagine how the band felt.  These guys are the real deal.  They are so kind and Jacob announced that their new album was available and that we were the first to get a copy.  They were kind enough to sign a copy of their cd for everyone at the end of the night.  This dynamic duo cannot be missed.  They are on their way straight up to the top.  On the Concert Blast 10 point rating scale I would have to give them a 9.5. They provided a non-stop high energized performance which kept everyone entertained and their vocals sounded near perfect. On the downside I believe the show was a little too long with 17 songs and that the show should have ended with their hit “Be My Girl.”  I hope that everyone goes to see them live when they come to a town near you because you will have the time of your life.  There is nobody out there like this band right now.  Make sure to catch up with them on social media using the links below.
